Super size me
I was blown away of what the real effects of food from there had. Especially the super size meal. From that first part of the movie i havent gone to mcdonalds but went to SUBWAy haha. So i guess you can say that ive learned quite a few things about junk food and really bad junk food. The documentary was to prove to us from an experiment of how mcdonalds can really be beneficial to obesity in the U.S.

Fallacies
Ive heard Fallacies a few times in trying to describe some aspects of life. Also how convincing it can turn out to be illustrated. Which would turn out to be fallacy of composition. For example in the book it says a team of five nba all stars is the best team in basketball if each of the five players is the best at his position. The fallacy is called composition because the reasoning commits the error of arguing from the true premise that each member of the group as there own certain property. This fallacy stuck out the most to me. Reminds me of how you can be an under dog and win the unthinkable.

Chapter 6
chapter 6 provided me with information of how to plan and develop a strong argument through questioning your ideas and formulating specific techniques for your argument to establish a point across. More importantly the revision and evaluation of the body essay. It gave me a good sense of what to do in the future when i want to develop an essay more clearly.

chapter 4 blog
I found this chapter to be very interesting because it talks about the visual effects that an argument can have also the persuasion it can have. Also that if some pictures should be posted around the world because it will discriminate the people that it offends. Those can be some of the draw backs to visuals, for example how the Danish published a picture of prophet mahmmad being disrespected. It soon spread to islamic countries and caused an uproar. The value of visuals is that it can create a broad message such as the MLK speech with the lincoln memorial as the visual for the speech.

drive to collingwood
what james stresses in his essay is that global warming is a major issue in todays society. The visual effect is that as he drove and to my sight that theres no sign of snow or anything. Its not even cold enough to make fake snow so he stresses global warming in that visual picture. Its especially surprising because in ski resorts its not always a problem. Mainly because its always located in the coldest areas of America. Then this problem occurs and raises alot of concerns

propaganda techniques
He addresses the pain folks technique because he was really part of middle class america growing up. Having interacial parents and being raised with a single parent. So addressing that really showed a lot of sacrifices hes made. Also the hardships of growing up. He went after McCain of how hes a so called "maverick" when he voted with Bush over 95% of the time. This would be called statistics but with context. Mainly because it shows McCain on t.v. publicly saying he voted with Bush and it shows in the statistics. A big one is confidence because Obama is a person who shows and knows what hes talking about. He's never at a vulnerable stage.

Barack Obama delivering
This speech of course should go down in history because it marks MLK day and Barack being the first black presidential candidate for the U.S.A. I chose this speech mainly because Barack changed up his propaganda in the speech. He really attacked the issues that plagues the U.S. and what his opponent plans to do. He first most importantly addresses the pain folks technique because he was really part of middle class america growing up. Having interacial parents and being raised with a single parent. So addressing that really showed a lot of sacrifices hes made. In Barack's techniques he doesnt stereotype or anything he just mainly went after McCain of how hes a so called "maverick" when he voted with Bush over 95% of the time. This would be called statistics but with context. Mainly because it shows McCain on t.v. publicly saying he voted with Bush and it shows in the statistics. I guess this can be called a Scapegoat technique. Barack isnt well know for attacking someone verbally but more of a humble confident person who knows what hes doing.

propaganda article
This articles was very helpful and kind of reminded me of the techniques the presidential candidates are using. Like repetition if a person tends to repeat the main subject enough you will eventually convince people. Even though we dont like things repeated, even if its put into different words. A good example of confidence would be Barack Obama because he knows what he is talking about and can back up everything he explains. My favorite one is plain folks because here the person tries to relate himself to the people and is part of them. But indeed there are only a few who can relate. For example there childhood growing up and what not. If you grow up rich, you have no idea about the middle class and how they feel. I learned a great deal about propganda especially not to get manipulated by it.

Chapter 5
Finally this chapter was short. But this chapter talked about how to write an analysis for a argument and show us examples of it such as the authors purpose and methods of how to draw the audience. Using methods such as the title which grabs the readers attention and the opening paragraph. In my view of the story hunting can be effective to slow down the population because as it says in the story there has been declining hunters in the past couple of years. Which is good for the environment but what do we do if the population of deer is uncontrollable and that deer is main purpose there are lots of killings in the U.S.? I think if we maintain a good balance to control the population and hunting it would be balanced.

Obama Dismisses Palin Criticism
Basically in this article Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin criticizes Obama on his experience and what his plans are for the future. But what she lacks for the most part is experience herself. I mean think about it, what if something happened to McCain would she be ready to be president. One thing she lacks the most if Foreign Policy. But Biden has about 30 years experience in it. She's a great politicianist but not a candidate for vice president. And as for McCain he's voted for Bush 95% of the time. That doesnt sound like a maverick to me. I think to myself what do they people think when they here that from his own mouth. What Obama points out in this article which is key is that they dont show there plan or agenda. They were avoiding discussing economic by talking about drilling and making healthcare affordable.

Chapter 3 and handout blog.. ya digg?
I have to say chapter 3 was a long chapter and i skimmed through the chapter to find the important facts that i dont already know. Such as reason versus rationalization of how reason isnt necessarily are only way to find the truth. The also show an example from Benjamin Franklin's autobiography. Also of hwo premises are stated assumptions used as reasons in an argument. Then to produce a conclusion called a syllogism. There were key concepts in this chapter that are important for writing. The handout explains of how some certain books maybe inappropriate for children to read for school reading. But one parent argues that if we expose our children to the real world they will be more prepared rather than shield them from reality. So i agree about the book situation that we should experience books that would tell us the truth and get us prepared. But on the other hand if we are forced to read something we dont like then we obviously will be lazy to read cause it doesnt grab our attention. We should be able to choose what we want to read then it being chosen for us. It would make a BIG difference.

chapters 1&2 blog
Chapter 1 is an interesting topic talking about regular human thinking connecting to our everyday lives and not just in writing. When we tend to think about certain thing we tend to extend our thoughts for a future cause. Also questioning our assumptions and evidence in our critical thinking. As in the book about the florida case of how there most be a justification for demanding a photo identification. For most obvious reasons is national security but for the most obvious reasons of refusal is relgious beliefs. So the argument may continue discussion of how it threatens national security. For example of real terrorists covered there face but were hiding certain devices that are a threat. Thats why we have to think critical.
Chapter 2 is generally talking about how to read and write an essay. Skimming can be a way of finding the main ideas but reading the whole passage is good idea to understand it. Also paraphrase the passage also is a difference becuase you can correctly give credit to the author but not properly cite your source.

me, myself, and i
My name is yafet i am currently in my second year at nova. I luv playing soccer and being active. I tend to be really loud because being quiet isnt really showing yourself to the world. In this course i want to extend my learning in english from 111 and continue to learn how to write essays, etc.
I want to learn how to write great resumes for future reference when your applying for serious jobs. This blog can really help us put our thoughts to work and let our minds go. We tend to learn more as we write and get opinions from other peers. So this blog is a good experience for everyone to learn from one other and gain knowledge.
I just hope in this blog i can gain knowledge on how to deliever a great essay and how to go in depth in writing. The critical thinking is one type of subject i favored because it relates to what we do everyday. Also presenting evidence and the assumptions. As it says in the book "when we reread a draft we have written, we read it with a skeptical frame of mind."
